Origin story

A small yield, and no compromise on quality.

Khawlani coffee has grown in Yemen's mountains for centuries, on terraces cut into the slopes. Dragon's Tree comes from one of those farms: Ibrahim Mohammad's, in Bani Malik village in the Khawlan bin Amer district. Open each step below to follow it from Khawlan to your cup.

The Naga's Charm naga

Single farm

Tended by Ibrahim alone

Ibrahim, 38, tends his family farm in Bani Malik village on his own. His yield is small, but his quality is not. His father, Mohammad, used to work the trees alongside him; his health keeps him from the farm now, but Ibrahim still turns to him for advice on planting and harvest.

2,300 m

15–25 °C on the farm

Dragon's Tree grows at 2,300 meters, the highest of any coffee we carry, where the farm runs from 15 to 25 °C. Cooler air at this height slows how fast the cherries ripen, and that slower ripening is a big part of why high-grown coffee tastes more layered.

Natural

Sun-dried Udaini

Dragon's Tree is Udaini, a traditional Yemeni variety, and it's a natural: the whole cherry dries in the sun with the fruit still around the bean, so the fruit's sweetness settles into the seed. This lot is from the 2023 harvest.

82 pts

Importer cupping score

Our importer cupped this lot at 82 points: caramel, butter and hazelnut in the aroma, milk chocolate and hazelnut nougat in the cup, a medium acidity, a sweet brown-sugar body and a clean, uniform finish.

Baltimore

Roasted here

Dragon's Tree arrives as green coffee through our Yemeni importer and is roasted here in Baltimore, with our packaging sourced in Baltimore too: we're a Baltimore-first business. Roasting here supports local coffee shops, and every bag ships in eco-conscious packaging under strict delivery standards. Restaurants, bars and shops can carry it too, as green or roasted coffee.

What people say about Naga’s Charm Coffee

Alex Quach

“I purchased some roasted coffee beans and I can say the coffee I made was fantastic, I usually go to Starbucks for my daily coffee but I'm going to stay home and use my coffee maker with this brand to save money, for an even better taste.”

“Where do you start when you have so many great coffee choices to try... well you try them all. Naga's Charm Coffee is exceptional and after working for 5 years in the coffee industry I developed a palette that is spoiled. That same palette is no longer thirsty since finding NCC and now I can't wait till the weekends when I usually brew my coffee.”

Questions

Where does this coffee come from?

Ibrahim Mohammad's single farm in Bani Malik village, Khawlan bin Amer district, Yemen, grown at 2,300 meters.

What does the flavor actually taste like?

Caramel and milk chocolate with hazelnut, a medium acidity and a sweet, brown-sugar body.

What is Khawlani coffee?

Coffee from Yemen's Khawlan region, where it has been grown on mountain terraces for centuries. Farms are small and family-run, like Ibrahim's.

Which grind should I choose?

Whole bean keeps it fresher longer and is the better choice if you grind at home. Without a grinder, pick the grind that matches how you brew.

How should I store it?

Sealed, away from light and heat, at room temperature. Skip the freezer: the moisture swings do more harm than good.
